Can Too Much SEO hurt your Rankings?

    Hi guys,

we have more backlinks (relevant and quality ones) than most of our competitors and we continue to build one-way backlinks, but since today we have noticed a drop of 5 positions in the google SERPS for our main keyword...

which leads me to this question: is there such a thing as Too much link building or too much SEO? What is too much? Our link building is always targetted and relevant, is it still bad to have too much of it?

    Cheers

i m guess that this is a temporary, i m also got same type situation some days ago, but read below suggestion that may be help u.

only backlinks cant help to increase your serp u have need to put quality and unique content in your site and have need to update your site pages and content regularly. :)
google consider all backlinks as a vote to your site and if google catch that this is fake backlinks then may be u get penalty.

also depend on your backlinks quality and they must be from relavent niche. (u already do this so i think u not update your sites, plz w8 for more comments, may be any seo master help us.) i m not seo master but i think this will be help u. :)

Yes, unnatural speed of link building may harm ranking though its a relevant and quality stuff...also there is no hard and fast rule about what the link building speed shld be...it depends on domain age, sites credibility..the trust rank it has gain over the period...one can only set the link building rate for his site through its experience with ranking drop or pagerank penalty...

this is ur time to learn smthing..recall wat efforts u did in last couple of months and set it right to stay on top...best luck!

Excessive link building with unnatural way may hurt, but there may be temporary drawbacks resulting from other reasons than link building.

SEO isnt all about links, links and more links you know (DESPITE what you read ont this site, mainly by bloggers).
Work on your site and the technical processes. If you dont know how to do this, get someone to do it for you.

Linking only becomes an issue if you cause spikes in your link growth.

If you cause a spike your rankings will either fall or MORE likely ( imho ) they will be frozen.

Remember that google wants to see natural behaviour and a consistant linking profile.

Some sites for example may consistantly have spikes in their link popularity as part of their linking profile.

For most it is a sign of increased seo activity.

You need to maintian the linking rate at a fairly constant rate this will allow you to increase your serps over time

YOUR NEW RATE OF LINK GROWTH NEEDS TO BECOME YOUR HISTORICAL LINK GROWTH PATTERN. This will allow you to fully benefit from the links that have been added

    This is all my opinion

    Cheers,

I think too much seo can hurt our search engine rankings. We should look at getting thousands of one way links with the same anchor text instead should use some variety in our anchor text

IMO, anything that is done too much is bad just like in building links for a site. I believe that link building should not be in a rush. It should take time and be done slowly but constantly especially if your site is just newly launched. If you build links too fast, search engines might raise red flags which will then devalue many of your gathered links. It's better to slowly build up backlinks. Instead of building thousand of links in a day, just build few quality backlinks per day. This may provide your site with long term benefits.
