Can too many links from social bookmarking sites harm my site?

    Hello,

I am faced with this problem:

I have a content based website, and I would like to social bookmark each article on my website, to get additional traffic and backlinks.

My question is: if I have a high number of links from one social bookmarking site pointing to each page of my website, wouldn't it be considered a sort of link spam? I've noticed that some social bookmarking sites have a user page where all my bookmarks are listed. This page would have a lot of links to my website, and I know it's not good to have many links from the same page.

I know some of them use 'nofollow' tags, but I want to be sure that i don't risk to get penalized by google if I have all my articles submitted to the major bookmarking sites.

If you have experience with this, please advise.

    Thank you.

I don't think so. With enough success on the social sites you'll get natural links from it anyway. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

One thing you should worry about is that many social bookmarking sites do not condone mass bookmarking your own pages. So read the rules before starting each site. If you're worried about the links affecting rankings, just slowly build them up over time. Setup some kind of schedule such as 10 social bookmarking links per day. Also vary the link anchor text. Just try to make it look as natural as possible. Don't just mass dump 1000 links across the social bookmarking sites overnight. It should also help to build up some links from other sources. Ideally you would have a balanced link profile that does not go too heavy on any one strategy.

You can get 10000000 links over night and it will be ok as long as you don't link back to the same sites. There is no penalty for too many links too fast, again as long as you don't link back to the places you are getting the links from. Belive it or not I myself have seen over 15 000 links on a site over night which got benefit and no penalty multiple times. The only problem is those links will have to mature to get some serious recognition.

Yes you can get some large quantities of links fast, that is only natural. At the same time, I wouldn't do this for a brand new site. If your link building pace suddenly dies off, it looks spammy. Part of it depends on how much trust you already have with Google and how much the linking site is trusted.

I think it is okay because they point to different pages anyway.. But looking into the terms and conditions of the site would be best since you can't say that all sites allow such..

    Thanks for your answers!

The bookmarking sites I was thinking about are the big ones, like Digg, Delicious, Reddit.

I wanted to do it specially for traffic, and secondary for links, since I know most of them have no-follow, but I just wanted to make sure they won't harm in the case they have do-follow.
And again, it's bookmarking each article, not the same page 100 times.

Which social bookmarking sites are the most recommended, except for the ones I already mentioned?

I don't need a large list, just the best 5-6.

    Thanks

It depends if they are nofollowed or not. But large amount of links on a social bookmarking page, the links dont pass much power. Use social bookmarking for visitors and search engine discovery. It will cause no harm, in short. But never overdo anything.

There is no way you can be hurt by social bookmarking links. Otherwise, why bother doing SEO? Just knock your competitors one by one by spamming their site pages into scuttles/pligg sites using software. If you built too many links too fast, it could cause some type of swing effect, in which your SERP for lesser keywords gets knocked back, then after a few weeks, ranking should be restored.

the basic rule is don't make too much backlinks in one day. Make a link building plan and go on.

Yes, making a link plan always helps to get proper SEO. I agreed with you.

And also different IP and users are also advisable.
