    G'day All

    Please excuse my novice status, as i know absolutely nothing about programming.

    It would be appreciated if some kind member or members could provide advice on how the follwoing might be achieved.

    There is a horse search feature, where you type in the name of a horse, hit the search button and it returns a result. You can see it here http://www.ror.net.au/HorseIdentification/pgHIPFindHorse.asp

    Anyway, I have an external site, and i want to know if it is possible to place a similar seach box and button on my site, so that when someone enters in a horse name and clicks "search" on my website, it takes them to the external website with the result already generated.

    Is this possible? Is it difficult to do? What options do I have?

    Cheers

    Jake

    Hey Jake,

    The short answer to your question is yes, it can be done. Create a form on your website, including the search text box, button, etc.

    The form METHOD is "post" and ACTION is "http://www.ror.net.au/HorseIdentification/pgHIPFindHorse.asp". The site performs some validation, but this is a quick hit here.

    Let me know if you need any additional information, good luck!

    Snippet: <form method="post" action="http://www.ror.net.au/HorseIdentification/pgHIPFindHorse.asp">

    No you should not use other's site script, learn PHP/ASP and mysql and code it yourself.

    G'day Guys

    Thank you so much for all your input. As I said, I am a bit of a novice, and the developer who controls the work website is a bit unsure of how to do it. So i thought I would come here for some advice.

    I have not ruled out the idea of hiring an external developer to create it, but first i thought I would see if there was an easy way for my developer to do it. If i was to get an external developer to do it, I owuld have to make sure that my current developer knows how it is being developed, as he is the one that would have to physically place it on the site.

    Any idea on how much something like this may cost if i went with an external developer, say from this forum?

    Cheers

    This doesn't really sound like he's stealing other's code (which you shouldn't do) but more like linking to another site... since when did that go out the window?

    It's also very easy to tell someone to go learn the code themselves when that's what you do for a living. For example: If I were to make cars for a living (this is just a quick example of how easily you can be an ass) and you wanted one, I could simply tell you to go learn how to make your own.

    I see no problem with him creating a form that submits the data to the other site, he may want to contact that other site and ask for their permission first... but as far as I know, he's not iFraming it or trying to keep the user on his site. He's just sending them to a new site with the search box already submitted.

    Thanks for clarifying this for the others, all we are doing is posting the data to another site.

    Jake, here is a snippet of the form to post the search criteria to the search on the external site.

    <html>
    <head>
      <title>Horse Search</title>
    </head>
    <body>
      <form method="post" action="http://www.ror.net.au/HorseIdentification/pgHIPFindHorse.asp" name="frmSearch" id="frmSearch">
        <input size="20" name="txtHorseName" value="" maxlength="60" type="text">
        <input id="btnHorseName" name="btnHorseName" value="Search" type="submit">
        <input name="hidMode" id="hidMode" value="ProcessSearch" type="hidden">
      </form>
    </body>
    </html>

    Code (markup):
    Good luck!

    Cri2T, you are spot on.

    I have a relationship with the external website, so there is no problems there. The only problem is establishing the operational process of it all.

    As for learning it, you are right there two. Some people are good at code and have studied it, others are good at vision and ideas. If one has good ideas, they are better off getting an experienced person to do the coding for them, in order to save time, and make sure it is done correctly. I could spend a year learning code and still not be able to do it as good as someone who has several years experience

    No problem, I figured there had been a communication problem when I saw the topic go from helpful to flameful. :(
