can this be done?

    is it possible to install wordpress on your hard drive and trial themes, modifying theme etc without having to go online?

    Yes it is go http://wordpress.org/download/ and download it and upload it on your localserver and try it out:).Incase you dont know how to set up a localserver download the xampp package and use that to set it up :)

    Wordpress themes are just HTML and CSS, you could test it out using any free HTML editor.
