Can submitting to directories harm your site if done in bulk?

As there are a few people offering to submit to loads of directories I decided to take up a great offer from a D.P member here, who I must say did an excellent job, no complaints. The site is new and I want to get the word out there. The trouble is my anxiety site below is ranked very high with google on keywords and phrases and gives me good traffic. I have heard that getting too many links to soon can harm you, as I have less to gain and everything to lose and as I can't afford to be penalised by google or any other searech engine. So my question is could it harm me to take up the offer with this site?

    Thanks for any advice

    Paul

Directories take a varying amount of time to approve links, most that are going to respond do so within a fortnight, but a few will take a few months or even longer to add your website. They are also indexed by search engines with varying frequency, so you won't often get a sudden spike from directory submissions.

I've heard this fear expressed fairly often. What would be interesting would be if anyone has any case studies of websites that experienced a sudden drop in traffic after submitting to directories.

I used to provide submission service to high PR (PR4+) FREE directories. So I made a great list of around 100 such directories.

I started to submit one of my site -to them 4 days back --but I am DUMBSTUCK.

More than 75 of of those directories have very low PR now -and some have become PR0.

My concusion - Google is looking at them as Link-farms due to their editorial failure.

I have stopped using them any longer as links from them won't be good for my site.

NOTE: -- there are some really high Qaulity free directories--thogh the Number is now far less than they were few weeks back.

I think Its more likely that

The owners stopped marketing them, happens all the time with free directories

They did not renew their link relationships, also happens all the time

They started with bought domain names which had High TBPR not backed by links

IMHO, TBPR/PR is probably fully automated, it would not fit in with googles philosophy of scalable solutions

Anyway, to th OP, Methinks you should submit away, the more the merrier, but do check to see that the
directories have pages indexed in all the SEs

The third option is not there--because these directories have been online for sometime and all directory submitters are familiar with them.

Idealy one can easily make out about OLD PR domains by going one click deep.:)

Ya thats true, not every directory approves your link at the same time..
Also, some free directories may never approve your links..

Also, not every site is crawled by google at the same time ;)
