I use all Linux and do not readily have access to IE and was wondering if someone could look at the following CSS heavy layout and tell me if it looks good in IE? It looks good in Chromium, Opera, and Firefox. I have tried to use a site that returns what a site looks like in various browsers a number of times and most times it takes forever and my request for screenshots expires before any are returned. http://174.120.136.123/~carlos/xk47/c.html The above link is to my layout on a shared host directory that I use for scratch purposes where I do not give out a domain name. If you can check it out that would be great! Please indicate what version of IE you use if you do and how it appears to you. What you should see is a 3 column layout with a header and a footer. The columns should grow vertically to be the same height as the longest column and the background colors should grow down each column as the column grows in height. If you click on the "Add to Right Column" or "Add to Left Column" you will cause extra text to go into the respective column to see how it grows and whether it appears properly. Thanks. Carlos
Your layout is broken in all versions of IE from 5.5 to 8. May I suggest using this instead? http://matthewjamestaylor.com/blog/ultimate-3-column-holy-grail-ems.htm
I have studied the exact CSS layout you linked to quite a bit and it is incredibly convaluted and complicated in my opinion. It's almost impossible for me to follow what he did. I mean I know what he did logically speaking. I mean it's almost impossible for me to sorround the wrappers and div's he uses with borders and follow what appears on the screen. It's one giant mish match of misplaced and misaligned boxes to come out looking good on most all browsers. The problem is if I ever bump into something that requires me to change the dimensions of his wrappers and div's. I'll be lost in his mixed CSS box model. I tried changing dimensions in one selector only to have the boxed model he was using get all whacked out of shape in another. And when changing the other it in turn would cause another part to get all bent out of shape such that I ended up lost in a sea of CSS spaghetti code. If the layout that I have been working on works just fine in Chromium, Firefox, and Opera then IE must have some bug that is causing it to break. I will try and track that down and see if I can develop a hack for it. Thanks for the feedback Dan! Much appreciated. Carlos
Be careful, there have been times when I have seen Internet Explorer actually render a page CORRECTLY while the other browsers got it wrong.
That's true Dan only in this case the layout author of the one that I have been using as a base for my version had an IE workaround hack in his code that I didn't include in mine. So the first thing I will do is get his hack, put it where it belongs, and then play around on a friend's computer when he is not around to see if the hack makes it work properly. I am not ready to give up on this layout yet. It's SO much cleaner and nicer than the one you linked to and just about any other 3 column layout I have seen (and I have looked at a whole bunch). If you wouldn't mind doing me just one more favor Dan can you look at the original layout in IE (with his hack) and tell me if it works properly? It can be seen at http://phrogz.net/CSS/columns3.html Thanks. Carlos
phrogz is not responding. Is this a one-time design build? Because if you are going to ever make other websites you need to have access to IE. I'm running Ubuntu and I get my IE through a Virtual Box, which inside holds a copy of Windows (I used the license that came with my laptop). Actually ended up making two copies, one to have a native IE6 and another to have a native IE7 with Tredosoft's Multiple IEs for IE5 and 6 (which render rather like IE5 and 6 but don't do JS or Flash like real IE5 or 6).
Hey ..just FYI ... you can use http://browsershots.org/ to view how your webpages will look in different browsers and OS, even if you don't have access to them... and it's a free service
Thanks for the additional input you all. Yeah...the browser shots site is the one I was talking about earlier where they only give you a set amount of time to get your request for shots fulfilled by them or else they reset and your request is toast. I tried them a number of times on different days recently and every single time my request for just one or two shots from an IE browser version expired without giving me enough time to get the shots I was looking for. Re: using a virtual box in Ubuntu. That's a good route to go for sure but such a hassle to get installed and working. Like most things Linux (which in general I love) it takes some tweaking and fiddling to get things to work. I just don't have time to do that and won't for a few more weeks. So it's ask on forums, try browser shots once more, or wait for my landlord's computer to be available for a quick peak at his IE version running in his Windows. I too could not access the site at the last link I posted above. The internet was down temporarily in the San Diego area last night for about 15 minutes. Maybe it's working today. Carlos PS. Yup. I just checked it. http://phrogz.net/CSS/columns3.html is accessible at this moment at least from where I am in the San Diego area. If anyone has a minute to go and see the layout at that link and to tell me if it looks ok in their version of IE that would be awesome! It is the layout that mine is based on but unlike mine, the one at this link has an IE hack that supposedly makes it work on that browser.
I just submitted a new request to browser shots. As usual it gives itself 30 minutes to get back to me with 3 screen shots of IE versions (3 different one's). And as usual the time is counting down to when my request expires without any screen shots being returned. We'll see if they come back this time. Mind you I am not complaining. It's a free service. What can I expect...but still it would be nice if it came back with some useful screen shots within 30 minutes. Carlos
browser shots finally worked! The base layout seen at that last link works fine in Windows IE 8.0. It is very slightly broken in Windows IE 7.0 in that the footer shows up shifted to the left for some reason. The screenshot for Windows IE 6.0 has not been returned yet but in any case I am more concerned with Windows IE 7 and 8 than I am with 6. So with the author's hack in place Windows IE 8 works just fine and 7 is only very slightly broken. I should be able to create a seperate IE 7 CSS file (if needed) to correct Windows IE 7. Thanks again for your all's input. Much appreciated. Carlos
Windows IE 6 is also broken a tad. The screenshot for that version came back too. The box appears correctly but the text in the footer disappears to the left this time instead of the whole box being shifted. Hmm....looks like the same sort of problem in both 6 and 7. Interesting. You know it may be that I never refreshed browser shots before in time to see the screenshots that come back. Apparently one has to refresh the screen to see the shots. They don't just appear. I didn't know that. So my goof I guess. Carlos
I can get IE screenshots within about 40minutes but a mac always takes over an hour, every single time. I'm in the Netherlands. I could not work with such long times.
That might explain why browser shots wasn't working for me before. I mean it's possible that it was due to my not realizing I had to refresh the page to get my screen shots (I say possibly due to this but no likely as I think I remember refreshing it and still not getting my screen shots within 30 minutes - at which time my request would always expire). My use of browser shots was previously always from Canada. So the delay of over 30 minutes might indeed have had something to do with that. I didn't think about this but yesterday when I got back my 3 screen shots from IE on Windows...I was making the request for browser shots from the U.S. in San Diego. Which when I think about it is an internet hub of sorts. With lots of providers, servers, and otherwise located here. Maybe that is why it now works whereas before it did not for me. Don't know. I'm just glad to see it working again. Carlos
To return something of value to you all in return for the input I got...I found a place that is MUCH better than browser shots with respect to viewing site pages on the various versions of IE. http://ipinfo.info/netrenderer/index.php Just so you all know. Carlos
