My site, http://www.promosontime.com is a year old and bounces on Google from approx number 40 to up to 170 for the competitive search term 'promotional products' every 3-4 days. A constant pattern. I have numerous backlinks through reciprical, blogs, directories, ezine articles, and press releases plus I optimize all of the meta tags and am constantly adding both new products and fresh informative copy. Outside of purchasing about 8-9 links from directories, I can't think of anything else. Am I doing all I can. Is my site optomized enough, or is it just too new against established competition?
It sounds like you have a little more competition than I did for a page that I optimized with the keywords of my pictures. On one of my sites that I had a few pictures that had unique keywords, that made my site on the first page of Google for that search term. The site didn't have any backlinks and had only been up for a couple of months. The pictures were also hosted by Google, so I am sure that probably helped.

I am talking about Yahoo site explorer that shows links pointing to your site and Google webmaster tools that shows links pointing to your site too. So comparing results of these tools you can see how many links are missing in Google.
