Can someone please explain Web 2.0 to me?

    Happy 4th. My girlfriend is in Hawaii and my roommate is at work. So I thought I might explore the meaning of Web 2.0 and where it is going? I have read Wikipedia articles and many other things. I read a thread on here about the Web 2.0 look. I talked on Joomla forums about tagging etc.

    You know, the best explanation I have ever gotten on any subject, I have gotten on DP. So if you have the time, please offer your thoughts. Is it a look? Is it new functionality?

    Thanks.

    Web 2.0 is defined by Wikipedia as,

    From a marketers point of view -

    In practical terms you're looking at the growth of interatcive communities who participate in content generation. Try taking a look at Digg and Shoutwire, RSS technology is a crutial part, even Digital Point could be described as being Web 2.0 not just because of the interactivity of the forum, but also the free applications and SEO tools.

    From an SEO point of view Web 2.0 can be a blessing and a curse. Coming up with worthwhile Web 2.0 ideas for forums, blogs and other forms of participation can be very hard. However a successful Web2.0 site drives it's own traffic growth though content generation and natural backlink growth.

    I think it is more of a move from static page websites to dynamic web applications. This is primarily driven by AJAX which allows content in a page to change without refreshing the entire page. This has enabled the community applications that people see as being Web 2.0.

    From what I've read, it seems quite ambiguous. There definitely needs to be some form of interactivity and customisation though. I've read the wikipedia articles and millions of sites could probably be stretched to fit the bill, but when I think Web 2.0, I only think of Digg, YouTube, MySpace, del.icio.us and Flickr. I'm sure there's plenty more but they're the most popular ones.

    For me what brought home Web 2.0 to me is this list found on O'Reillynet.com @ http://www.oreillynet.com/pub/a/oreilly/tim/news/2005/09/30/what-is-web-20.html

    In our initial brainstorming, we formulated our sense of Web 2.0 by example:
    Web 1.0 --> Web 2.0
    DoubleClick --> Google AdSense
    Ofoto --> Flickr
    Akamai --> BitTorrent
    mp3.com --> Napster
    Britannica Online --> Wikipedia
    personal websites --> blogging
    evite --> upcoming.org and EVDB
    domain name speculation --> search engine optimization
    page views --> cost per click
    screen scraping --> web services
    publishing --> participation
    content mgmt. systems --> wikis
    directories (taxonomy) --> tagging ("folksonomy")
    stickiness --> syndication

    What was Web 1.0 "technology" ---> these Web 2.0 "technolgies" have replaced them.

    The best explanation is from the people who coined the term here, but basically it refers to web applications that are products of the community that uses them. The idea is they become more powerful as more people use them, causing more people to want to use them, making it even more powerful, causing...... spammers to make a bunch of money off of them :D

    OK, bad joke :eek:

    You get the idea, though - it's not about big fonts and lots of whitespace like most people think!

    I came across this site that had some good articles on Web 2.0. He's also a Joomla guy. I'm in the process of redesigning my site to be more Web 2.0. Wish me luck.:D
