when domains are up for selll does it work like this:

    example.com

earns £100 monthly selling for £3500

do you basically pay so much and earn so much off it?

also is it possible to get a domain name free(with nothing on it ie build it up yourself)

Then what next?I would find an ebook selling site a good one to make, but i cant see much money to be made in that anymore, with ebay selling most ebooks for around 10p

Also then how do you go about getting people to your site etc - and gettings adds etc other than adsense?its kinda all confusing can anyone clear any of this up for me

edit:maybe i should have put this in the domains section?

Unfortunately the whole internet has become saturated with people trying to make money. Unless you have been running a website for the last few years you will find it difficult to get a high search engine ranking to make money from your site. The same applies to ebay sellers. Only the power sellers that have been at it a few years are really making money.

Not true at all if you work at it hard enough.

To answer your question, people can sell domains, or websites. The websites will usually have some revenue, and will come with the domain. Sometimes a domain without a website can have some revenue going if it's parked, but it wouldn't be more than a few cents every now and then.

There isn't really a way to get free domains, sometimes people will be offering free domains in the Freebies forum of DP. I'd recommend spending a little money to get quality names. You can try the Domains forum in the BST section, or go to NameCheap.com (or GoDaddy, or any other registar really) and spend a couple bucks for a domain name. .info domains can go for as low as $2, so there's nothing to lose really.

.com, .net, .us., .biz, .org etc. are all called TLDs, the domain is the EXAMPLE.com, so in that case the domain name is example.com. The subdomain would be like FROUMS.example.com- its really simple once you get the hang of it

A domain is a name followed by an extension. For example, www.piczo.com.

When piczo started their website, they decided on the name piczo. They registered the domain name piczo.com, and started their site on there. If you wanted to, you could register a name right now under .com, .info, .net, .biz, etc.

A subdomain is almost like a different website. In most cases, it's owned by the same company. In order to make a subdomain, you have to own the domain name. In some cases, subdomains are made open to the public, such as Blogspot. I'm not familiar with piczo but I'm guessing they do the same thing.

    Does that answer your questions?

A book could be written just to answer your questions as well as other questions that those answers would provoke.

When someone offers up a site for sale they generally provide at least two statistics; Traffic and Revenue. Both of which are affected by many factors including how the current owner is (or is not) promoting the site or driving traffic to it.

So, just as an example, Someone may offer a site and show that it is getting 1,000 uniques per day and earning an average of $100.00 per day. If these statistics are accurate then you may assume that with equal or better methods of promotion you could earn as much or more than $100 per day. Of course, the higher proportion of traffic from search engines the easier it would be.

So, to your question "do you basically pay so much and earn so much off it?"
    Yes, absolutely, maybe.

It can be tougher to promote your website and build your traffic flow than it is to design and build it in the first place. After all you may have the best looking site on the net but if no one finds it what's the use? That is why someone would want a good price (or be willing to pay one!) for a developed site that is getting a good flow of regular traffic.

Where the traffic comes is very important. If the original owner is getting traffic with PPC the total revenue number will not be an accurate indication of profit. If it takes $60 of PPC per day to generate $100 the actual earnings would be $40 per month. Whenever possible you want to know where the traffic is coming from. In my opinion search engine traffic is the most valuable. Your visitors arrive at your site because they are interested in your content. Generally speaking search engine traffic is free, but it does require work and time to get meaningful listings.

There are other things to consider when buying a developed site. The actual domain name, what it means to you personally, etc. If a domain name has a special meaning for someone they may be willing to spend more money.

Sometimes members here will offer free domains in the freebies section. However, in my opinion, if a person cannot afford to pay 7 to 9 bucks on a .com or a couple bucks on a .info AND obtain dependable hosting they arent ready for a money making website. Remember that the hosting will generally be billed at some monthly rate. Will you be able to pay that bill every month? Fortunately it shouldnt take long for anyone to gather up enough funds to get their own domain and a site can easily make more than enough to cover hosting fees.

You are welcome. I am glad it helped to explain. Just keep in mind that there is a lot to this subject and what I said above was mostly generalizations. After you have read a lot of different posts on about it you will have a more full understanding.
