i have a dell xps deskktop and the sound is very low, both the speakers and headphones. its so low that when i crank up the sound on max, i cant hear people talking in a movie through the headphones.

Is that a new machine? Have you tried using the audio system in playing MP3 songs? If it's a brand new computer, please contact your service provider. Also, check the audio hardware component of your system.
