I believe that google determines the "related" search by the sites that link to you. I think that they show sites that pages that link to you also link to.
may be. google used to return no data for "related" search, it started returning recently. also we started including our site in directories recently, so may be this is due to the impact that our site and other sites got listed on some directories on same page? any guess?
Most of the related sites G shows are sites on my server that I own. I think (but am not sure) that links from sites "related" to you are devalued.
Almost every site "related" to mine via the Google command is a link partner of mine or ranks close to me for a KW. I wouldn't worry too much if the sites are irrelevent unless you're linking out to many irrelevent sites causing this.
