If it's really a huge story, then just pitch it to Associated Press (www.ap.org) for free and you'll be in plenty of media outlets... of course that's only if they agree that it's a huge story. At least send a copy to your local paper. A local angle is often the easiest to milk.
I'd recommend running the great story angle by someone like me or Jenn on PM to get a pointer on where to seed the story and if it is actually something the media is interested in.
