can someone explain the concept of buying text links?

I know link building is essential in earning good search engine results, but how does link buying fit into all of this? When link buying is referenced on this forum, are people usually talking about permenant links or temporary links? I see permenant links could definetly boost your page rank, etc because it will always be there and it looks natural to the search engines. But when "renting" a textlink from a high PR website, I'm sure your site will be boosted initially, but what happens when the rental period is up? Won't your site go back down again once the search engines notice the link has been taken down?

Also with that said... which is better- buying temporary links or permenant links, and what sites do you guys like the best for buying?

If you're just starting up a site, it's hard to get quality IBLs, so it may be easier to just rent a few until you have some organically built up

I think renting links on a monthly subscription basis is best. Often you can get a bit of a deal if you pay yearly though.

It's a very simple concept. If you want your link placed on a reputable site, the webmaster is going to want something in return... Whether that means a reciprocal link exchange, $, or other barter work. I've gotten a lot of permanent 1-way links from offering my design services.

The idea of renting temporary links is to not risk paying a large amount of cash up front.

Most people will renew the contract to make the link pretty much permanent.

yeah but won't it screw up your search engine placement if you ever decide to stop renting? or is the idea to rent until you've built up enough natural backlinks so you don't need to rent it any more?
