Can someone explain how the "link unit" pays?

I've been at adsense and online publishing for awhile now and I've pretty well got the hang of the ad units for content. I've put the link units on my pages before and generated some income, but I don't exactly know how it works...

when I click on a link unit ad I'm taken to a google 'search results' type page. Does the publisher make money at this point or only after clicking on one of those 'search results'?

The publisher only earns money when the visitor clicks the link on the Google result page :)

Even with this, link unit is by far my best performing unit.

As KC TAN points out, basically 2 clicks worth, it does ok for me on one site in particular.

You get paid after two clicks.

This is the reason why I prefer ad units instead of link units.

Someone clicks a link on your Link Unit > They get "transferred" to a Google search page > In the even that they click on an advertisement on the Google search page, you get paid. If they do not click on an advertisement on the second page, no money is made.

I've done decent with link units; regardless of the fact that it is a 2-click process.
