Can someone explain a CPC and phrases issue please?

I'm trying out my first AdWords campaign, and I want to get clicks for a phrase like "Japanese widget gifts". The phrase "widget gifts" has many advertisers, so do I have to outbid them all if someone searches for "japanese widget gifts"? Or do I get some sort of bonus for having an exact phrase match?

There's no quality score bonus/benefit based on the match type.

By optimizing your campaign you can increase your click through rate (CTR) which will lower your cost of advertising and place your ad on a higher position. Google rewards good advertisers with a high CTR, by lowering the cost you’ll pay per click.

Thanks for the advice - the only problem is that my product has a perhaps rather slim profit margin, so I'm a bit reluctant to go high to begin with, and the main advertisers are selling items with bigger profit margins, so can afford to pay more per click...

I'll also have to go for organic traffic - heh, just noticed my landing page that I wrote just two days ago is now tops on Google for the phrase I want to advertise on, so I should ditch the AdWords campaign.
