Can someone damage your site's google SERPs?

I have been working on several sites and suddenly found one of them has dropped out of SERPS for even the key words of the domain name. Google shows pages in the site command and some links in the link command, so I am thinking the site is not banned. BUT:

I suddently lose all SERPS positioning
My web stats show increased actvity of iwebtools checking to see if my site is banned - I have only done this twice, stats shows the check has been run 10 times from iwebtools ... someone else running this check?

So, maybe I am paranoid, but the real question is....

"Can someone take any action that will damage your site's SERPs ranking?"

    Thanks

Quite simply, no. Unless they hack your site and deface it.

Dropping out of SERPS is normal - especially if this is a new site. No one can do anything to get you banned unless they have access to your site - and iwebtools just checks the site: command to see if you have pages in the index. It has no secret way to know what google has done. If your site has indexed pages, it is not banned. If your pages have gone supplemental, it could also be the reason for the drop.

When you check your indexed pages using the "site:" command you will see "Supplemental Result" next to the results for any page that has been placed in Supplemental Results" - which means google doesn't think much of those pages. There can be a number of reasons for this, including non-unique title, non-original or limited content, etc. Many threads on this.

may be you don't have enough quality links to your site so get some more relevant links and see if your ranking improve once the new links get crawled..

No one can tell on how will you maintain your SERP. So you should work hard a lot, remember that all your competitors would like to go on top of search engine ranking. You need to update your knowledge and skills as often as search engine update their algorithms.

Yes, it's possible, and quite easy for non-competitive terms such as company names or domain names.

All you have to do is promote several other pages for those terms (a few anchor text links is enough). Those pages then rise up the SERPS, and push down the site you want to bomb.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. My summary and conclusion to share:

My site has enough quality links to rank in serps, so this is not the problem.
My site is 5 months old, so quite young and may be more vulnerable to dropping out of SERPs.
google site check shows most of my pages, just one in supplemental - I will check this further.

Re iwebtools and the function for "google banned check", I ran a test. I checked my site in iwebtools, then checked AWSTATS for the site, it recorded an increase of 5 for the one check I performed!!!!! So I was being paranoid about this  Mind you its intgeresting to know this happens.

Overall I think the problem is most likely google intermittent SERPs and things will get back to normal, I will continue my link building.

Thanks again to everyone, your feedback is really appreciated.

Afther one year hard work, managed to get nr1 position in google.
And now my nr1 position for Ringtones is gone. Can't even find my site when I search for my domain name. So I need to work harder now.

In all honesty, this cannot happen. What if someone adds About.com to a link of 1 million links. Will it lose SERPS? I don't think so.

By the way, I have exactly the same problem as the OP. My google referrals have gone down from about 400-500 a day to 20-30 a day. All my main keywords have dropped.

Hurting someones serps can be possible.... it is just a matter of reason... I thing that white seo is much slower but much more appreciated and rewarded than black stuff in the end - so keep linking - hope the things will improove quite soon :D

Yep as mentioned above it is possible to hurt someone else's site in the SERPS by effectively negative link building on your behalf (i.e. free for all, link farms, spam blah blah) what would hurt you more is if you were to link back to any of these type of sites which of course you will avoid.

I'm guessing for someone to significantly hurt you in the SERPS they would have to put a lot of hard work in and create a LOT of these negative links, so much so they would be taking their eyes off their own link development efforts so would be stupid, their efforts would be better spent by concentrating on their own position.

That's my personal feelings on this.
