Hey ive been around here a month or two writing articles purly for clients.

I'm wanting to get my blog popular and successful, i was thinking of a general blog with no specific subject. Is this the way to go or should i pick certain subjects which I enjoy?

Once that;s chosen, should I write articles myself and embed a few links into my blog and then simply submit them to the article directories such as ezinearticles in order to get traffc and backlinks etc?

    Any input is appreciated,

    cheers

Choosing the subject you like gives you more motivation to write the blog and makes it a niche blog. As for obtaining traffic, you should first join some like-minded blog network/community thus sharing traffic with them (those people might have traffic which comes your way). If your blog content is unique and searched for quite often you will start receiving traffic from the SE's themselves.

Submitting to article directories etc can get you backlinks but mostly very negligible traffic. Instead submit to a chosen few top article directories. If your article is Diggable then digg it ;) also dont forget to stumble your website.

Edit: This is the wrong section to post this topic.

Go for a subject you enjoy, it will make it easier to maintain and you won't feel updating it a chore.

Why are you starting a blog to begin with?

And why would I (or anyone) visit it?

    Answer those two questions first.

To be honest im wanting to make one to get an extra source of income. Do blog require to much work by keep updating and getting content etc? Do you think I would be just better off finding regular clients and writing for them?

    Decisions decisions :D

And why do you think a blog is a way to make extra income?

See where I'm going here? You want extra income. But, why a blog? Why will people come? Why will they stay?

And yes, a traditional blog takes updating.

While you don't need to be the next best thing to make some money, you do need to answer some basic questions first.

Of course, I guess you could always take the easy way and just put up a blog, smack up a handful of articles, get PR and sell links. Rinse and repeat.

Yea thats one of the ideas i wa toying with, i know someone who sells links for like $10+ per blog post so that would be nice, but i guess that will take a long time as he has had it over a year.

i think it would be easier if you concentrate on a specific niche! having a blog about everything requires lots of articles.. a single man can't keep up with all the things happening!

Selecting a handful topics also gives your visitors the ability to form an expectation of what you will write about. If you're only going to write about philosophy once and only once, and they like philosophy, then they will move on elsewhere, but the inverse works, too.

I've always felt that a blog with some common topics allows the blogger to build a much friendlier blog which has common faces as well as newcomers based on word-of-mouth from the current class of visitors.
