I'm making a career change. I don't want to use up valuable job interviews to find out what people think I know or don't. I will be working very hard for those interviews. I've read up in areas I think I needed to. But I can't prove errors of omission. It's what others think, not me. I was a furniture importer and sold direct, so I did a lot of seo... but I don't know what's missing in my seo arsenal. I defineately don't want to do on-page anything or back-linking. My skills are best used in the beginning steps... keyword research, assessing competitor seo assets, finding true competitors, seo copy-writing, and also analytics. FYI I also know ppc very well. So I'll market myelf more broadly as a SEM guy. I have extensive consumer product management, product marketing, and drop-ship experience but I doubt agencies will give me much credit for these areas (agencies are my targets). So - it would be great to get grilled by someone! Either online or in-person (Boston). How do I get grilled? Ha. Crazy isn't it?
Based on the information you posted, I have to give you an assessment of . . . 3/10 You still need a lot of work. And experience.
Hi Timber, I'll give you a 2/10, and here's my reason why. First of all, you said that you don't want to do On-Page or Backlinking. That's like 80% of the puzzle towards ranking an actual website. Companies could care less about "SEO Assessment", what they truly are looking for is results period. If you can't get them to page 1, then other companies don't even want to look at you. They've had enough people already "assessing" them, and doing keyword research. Those "beginning stages" isn't even that hard, and most people can look it up in the internet. It's Simple, they want number 1 so they can profit, end of story Lastly, i think you should focus more on trying to better your SEO skills, and it will pay off in the future. Think about it, if you can't rank yourself number 1 to be your own boss & profit tremendously, then how are you going to have the confidence and get other people to number 1. You're "Beginning Steps Skills" can all be outsourced to fiverr for just $5 lol. So it's time to get better first before pursuing this venture. We've all been there before, but i'm sure you'll be up to the task! To Your Success, Marc
First of all, you said that you don't want to do On-Page or Backlinking. That's like 80% of the puzzle towards ranking an actual website. **back-linking I got done in India - it was $12/hr [a lot more $ for on-page stuff] Companies could care less about "SEO Assessment", what they truly are looking for is results period. **I'd bet figuring competitor's se assets are pretty important for clients who have done zero seo, right? Especially if you can advance by beating the competitor's assets, no? I think the best plan is get experience with on-page by working at a place for slave wages. What do you think? Maybe take me 30 hrs weekly for 6 months?
Just as long as your find something that works for you, but the SEO competition is tough. It's very lucrative, but you have to be just as competitive as everyone else Take care of your journey man! Best Regards, Marc
What's missing? Some key aspects. So that makes it 0/10 so far. You should know how to do on-page. You should know how to earn quality backlinks. I can forgive you for not wanting to go out and waste your time spamming, but you should be able to manage a strategy for earning links and produce results. You lose a point for mentioning "seo copy-writing". Learn to write content for humans. So far, -1/10. Due to your feelings about on-page SEO, I'm not confident in your keyword research and competitor analysis abilities, but you gain a point for analytics. That makes it 0/10. Now you are up to 1/10. I suppose that depends upon your definitions of "product marketing" and "consumer product management". If marketing means you would know how to market content and the consumer bit means you know how to build relationships with customers (and sites that "compliment", rather than compete with, you) through social media (or can transfer these skills to there), then you might gain quite a few points. So, in the end your score is 1/10, but might change depending on that last bit. Good luck, mate. Nothing personal meant and I hope the feedback is useful to you.
As you mentioned that you are not willing to do neither on-page nor off-page then how would you do SEO, keyword research is different thing but it is related to SEO, if you consider yourself an SEO, then you should have ability to rank keywords.. whether the keywords are highly competitive or middle competitive.
On the basis of your post, you are just at the starting points of SEO. You have the need to learn more and do more..
ryan_uk : "how to market content" Can you explain this phrase a bit... I think I know what you mean but not sure. And yes - building relationships with customers and complimentary sites is a very strong part of me. You have to think about who the audiences are, then make a plan to target those sites and customers. And I know how to build value and perceived value.
Timber I suggest you one place to learn and learn a lot.The most friendly area to go that is SEOMOZ.Digitalpoint I see a lot of Goods here but SEOMOZ is all about SEO there. They have beginners guide,Friday whiteboard and do not miss RAND single word. This is the biggest SEO junk I ever find out. Broken link building is one key area that I would suggest you need to work on.I never ever applied it up till now but its good and worth producing results.Started applying it just one month back.
And I would say that this forum would help you a lot if you participate here at regular basis, believe me.
