I would agree with number 1. Sub-domain really not working. I have no idea about google bomb.

First coverage on the BoogleBomb update.... those site reviews didn't say much new

So the January Google update is a good read as is some Matt Cutts site reviews from PubCon back in Nov 2006

As for me.. I am a fan of Phrase Based Optimization moving forward with the Google algo....
