Can PR Submission be hurting our rankings?

Hi there.

This is my first post on this forum and any help / advice is much appreciated :)

Our company domain (3 years old) has been SEO'd for a while but we've not done much in the way of link building.

Last month we started doing these twice weekly press releases and submitting them across a range of free PR distribution services - almost immediately the modest rankings that we did have just nose-dived.

We're about to go into a full on link-building campaign and we're worried that an influx of activity might be doing us more harm than good.

Can anyone offer any advice on this? Is it something that will right itself over time? Or could we risk getting penalised as there's been no previous linkbuilding activity?

Thanks in advance for you help :)

I would like to suggest you that you can continue your activity but do it slowley like 25-30 submission per day not more than that and for increasing your backlinks you can do

directory submission
Article submission
social bookmarking
RSS feed submission and more so U can increase your backlinks and you can increase the backlinks and that will help you to boost your rankings in the SERP

What do you mean by free PR distribution services? Are linking to sites that have PR? Can you elaborate this?

By the way link building is one great factor in rankings.....:p

If you want the opinon of someone who has excellent SERP rankings then brace yourself for my opinion....

I always do NOT recommend using article submissions or web directories, they don't provide much SEO weight and can have a "negative" impact on your SERPs in situations. Instead, you want to build quailty backlinks to your site, from sites that are relevant to yours. You'll want to use your anchor text as the keywords\phrases you want to rank for. Below is an example...

<a href="http://www.yoursite.com">ANCHOR TEXT</a>

Code (markup):
If your aiming for multiple keywords and phrases mix them up, it's always better to have different incoming anchor texts from other "relevant" sites. If you want certian pages to rank and not your top level domain use that url, it will not effect your other SERPs.

You can PM with your website URL if you'd like a review and some opinions.

Getting 5000 articles with the exact duplicate content is not that great. Editors who take your press release and write a small article themselves based on it on their blogs or other sites is good though.

Try using a spinner to get variations of the article.

You're not distributing your press releases properly, so yes, it's possible that they're hurting you because of it. Mass-distributing to a lot of sites isn't smart. It's also not smart to be using press releases primarily for link-building, as you can severely damage your company's / site's reputation in time by doing that (coming from an online PR specialist who's seen people screw their chances of bigger coverage b/c they're viewed as release spammers). I published an article a while back on my PR blog about how to distribute a release more effectively for free. It might help you see some better long-term results without having to give up a valuable tool:

Thanks very much for your help :) And apologies - when I said PR - i meant press releases (not Page Rank).

Points are noted, guess it's quality - not just quantity . . . and thinking about it, I guess many of the people who pick those press releases up are just gonna dupe the content and stick their own links in.

We also count ourselves as a reputable company, so we will heve to be careful not to spam press releases out.

Thanks again for the help :)
