Can our PR get penalized? My PR went from 6 to 4, and i don't get the reason..

i had a pr6 and now it dropped to 4

the only thing i changed in the backlinks section from my website was to put 10 more, to 10 sites of mine.

i thought i was going to rise the pr of the other sites, but unfortunately google understood the scheme and i think it penalized the big one..

    is this possible?

Are you placing links to your other sites on every page of your site?

Some times, google penalizes if excessive link exchanges are done, whether to your own sites or to other sites.

Does that mean I should put nofollow tags on my homepage section links?

Possibly the explanation is simply this: to get that earlier PR6, you must have had some nice links to your home page from PR6, even PR7, pages. If one or several of those linking pages dropped in PR, that drop is going to pass on to you a downward PR influence.

I lost a PR6 link to my PR5 home page. The next update, my 5 dropped to a 4. So check to see if your home page has lost some quality inbound links.

Don't you want your page rank to be lower, like a 1... Your page rank going from 6 to 4 means your page rank increased and if you search your keywords your page is the 4th on the list.. instead of 6th. Thats my understanding..

    That is the wrong understanding.

PR doesn't really mean too much expect to advertisers but in any case you want your PR to be as high as possible, i.e. as close to 10 as possible.

I have had a site go from PR4 to 2 which sucks big time. I don't get the webmaster tools section which shows that some of my pages have high PR but my homepage is listed as being the highest ranking in PR and it now has a PR of 2. Not very high...

I agree with Jim4767 about it likely being due to other links dropping in PR. With Google targeting things like paid links, sites get banned and lose their PR. Also some links just naturally drop in ranking...forum links, social bookmarking, blog posts. Those kinds of links eventually get archived and lose some of the PR. It probably isn't due to the 10 new links you added. Think of how many outgoing links some sites have and retain their high PR.

In my opinion, i think you have lost some quality links or at least those linking sites just dropped their PR ;)

The most likely reason is that your faith in Google has weakened, you haven't kept Google's commandments, and you haven't tithed by giving a dollar to my paypal.

However there is hope, Google is a loving Google and Google will forgive you, all you have to do is give a dollar to my paypal.

Google and his prophet Matt Cutts has shown me the update and it is nigh, prepare your site and give a dollar to my paypal to make sure you are not left behind. He has shown me that the update will come on December 12th at 11:47pm Central time and has told me to spread the word to save your sites from the depths of MSN. If you are left behind there will be 7 years of penalties before Google's final judgment of websites. In other words you better hurry up and give a dollar to my paypal.

anything is possible and anyone saying they understand why google does what it does would be either a highly ranked google employee or someone passing off guesswork.

Best to just forget about page rank as it will be what it will be and you really have no control over that. Work on the things you do have control over and that is your site. Keep building content and links to make a site people want to visit.

Now google is updating regulerly and crawling the site. So this is getting an immediate effect for the site. Also G changed its algorithm i think, many site looses heir PR and by myself loose PR but increase traffic.

Google is constantly changing algos for obvious reasons. The latest rumors I strongly believe in are posted on this thread. I think backlinks are no longer the strongest factor in PR. Way too many people have been raping the system with shady link schemes. Google catches many of them but not all, so why not change it, says Google?

Believe what you want, but IR (Influence Rank) is the way I believe PR is now primarily calculated.

Also watch out for Google's new search technology...it is going to turn SEO upside down. In beta now, released in the first quarter of 2009. Please don't shoot the messenger, read it from the source.

Google will ALWAYS be a moving target. It would be silly to think things like backlinks will always fuel PR!

That pretty well sums it up — "Keep building content and links..." There's more to do, but those are major parts of the main road.

It could have discovered by google especially if all those links come from the same server.

Usually drops like this seem to be from selling links.

Perhaps they think that the sudden block of 10 links to external sites were sold links, especially if they are in a block / footer / sidebar with no text around them and/or the other sites are not in the same niche

Yes, I know what Page Rank is.. I just have it backwards I guess. So having a PR of 1 is bad then? Hmm.. =/ Then what exactly does page rank represent then?

how you know what GooglePR is ,when you ask " So having a PR of 1 is bad then?" :))
it is not the rank on a page, you misunderstood.
