can one copy of Joomla power many sub domains?

    can i install a copy of Jooma on mydomain.com and build my sub1.mydomain.com, sub2.mydomain.com etc. with it or do I have to install a copy on each sub domain?

    Mambo (Joomla's former version) was able to do it with the multisites module, but I found it to be a huge pain and never got it working properly. Drupal, however, can do it with the core installation quite well.
