I was asked to look at a website that dropped off Google searches for a couple of key words that it used to do quite well with. (basketsbyeva.com) I found that the site is not in Google's index. So the site has been removed from the index, and I'm looking for ideas as to why. The site is a build-it-yourself site, and it uses Wix. I don't have any direct experience with the Wix site-generation software, but it appears to use Javascript to generate a Flash website. When it generates the HTML for the user's website it appears that it inserts text inside a <noscript> tag. My understanding is that the traditional use of the <noscript> tag is to provide some text for a browser to display when Javascript is not enabled in the user's browser. So, it might contain the text "You must enable Javascript to enjoy this website." or something like that. It seems that what the Wix code generation engine has done is insert all of the website's text inside the <noscript> tag. All the text that appears on each of the pages of the Flash website has been inserted into the single page of code for the site. All of it, including page titles, and the HTML tags for formatting the text. This creates an obvious discrepancy between what the googlebot sees and what the website visitor sees. Will this get a website banned by Google? Does anyone have experience with Wix, and if so, have you seen or heard of this issue? I'm no expert, and I can't see any other reason that this website would be removed from Google's index. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks....Duane
I think, that it's not banned, but just not indexed , since the internal structure is just... variable, that is passed to a flash. Google does not index flash, its just like one big image. Was the site formerly in Google? If yes, was it in another structure, or just this really wierd flash thing? What does the G-webmaster tool says?
I don't think its banned either. The only problem is google bots cannot "see" flash and Flash is not bot friendly. It would not count as content. So maybe google does not index it or ranks it poorly is because it does not recognize the content that the website has since everything is flash. The whole website would be counted as not search engine friendly. If you want it to rank, i do suggest that you would have more text content by itself so that googlebots can recognize it. Hope this helps
Google does index flash. Perform a search in Google for inurl:swf I've done some SEO work on a website that uses a similar system to Wix. I think it was called Moonfish for something. It also uses no script tags from what i can remember and i managed to get it ranked fairly high for a couple of key search terms. I suspect that problem you are experiencing is something else entirely and not to do with <noscript> tags.
Thanks for the comments. The site was in the Google index up until some time in late November, when it seems to have been removed. My understanding also was that Google indexes Flash. So, could the content in the noscript tag be thought of a spamming key words? It duplicates 100% of the content inside the Flash movie. Did the Moonfish system also create Flash movies? Thanks...Duane
It is not the reason for de-indexing any site. Google indexes flash but can't read content in flash so we use no-index.
Hi, deepak.pal. I don't understand what you mean by "we use no-index". Use it where, and what is the benefit of using it? Thanks...Duane
@ draydesign I've investigated the website in more detail but i haven't slept for 25 hours =( so i couldn't do a thorough check but the solution is to re-develope the website not using WIX. Harsh, i know but it's the reality. It's a simple site to code anyway so best solution. FYI what i did was started with studying your HTML source and started to come up with these recommendations - - Remove UA154974891 from meta keywords - Avoid excessive use of capitalisation within the meta description tag except for geographical locations. - Avoid using <h1></h1> tag with no content - Do not use underscores within <h2></h2> - instead use <hr> tag. - within noscript tags wix does not link to any of your inner pages / products pages, so therefore Google will see this as just a one page website with all your content of all your inner pages on your homepage. The flash website that i mentioned before did not do this.
Thanks very much for your effort on this, Billybear. I agree that putting Wix in the rearview mirror is the way to go on this one. Many thanks for your help. Sleep well...Duane
