Link exchanges can directly help with website traffic if you manage to get a relevant link on a page which has traffic itself.
For example if you have an article title "buying advice for blue widgets" and you manage to exchange a link on a page (with traffic) that sells blue widgets my guess is you will get a good amount of traffic from that page. You should only exchange links with relevant pages. The best pages to pick for exchanges are pages that your site will offer something that the reader of that page wants (see example above) - you're more likely to get a link exchange request accepted if this is the case.
A few choice link exchanges should form a small part of your link building plan.

Of course it helps. Exchange the links within "your territory" and they´ll bring you the direct traffic and help your ranking as well.

Check also where the link will be placed on the partner´s site, it is important as some f...ers offer you link exchange but then you´ll find out, their linking page is not indexed and cannot be crawled as there is no link to it from other pages of that site.

Also in that case you can help yourself - just link to that linking page for a while. You can also write a flaming article, submit it to article directories + little mention in some respected blog´s comments or social network and yup, you created fair PR5 page out of sh.t linking to yours.

 

Most exchanges i make give me 1 visit a month. However every now and then you will get a quality site that gets a suprising amount and can yield a good return.

Its one of those things that just have to be done though!
