Hi, I am thinking to build a portal using CMS, i.e. user under the portal can build/maintain its own website (using the functions/utilities that we build using the CMS or the functions/utilities directly provided by the CMS) which can have its own users. In choosing the most suitable CMS, I wonder if Joomla can do the followings? (sorry I am a newbie to the Joomla) 1. it needs to be able to support 3-layer user relationship. The first is the super admin on the portal level; the 2nd layer is the admin of each website under the portal; and the 3rd layer is the user of each user website. (I know DotNetNuke can handle it.) 2. It must have very good scalability, meaning it needs to be fast/stable/manageable under large traffic. (I heard DotNetNuke is quite slow) 3. It must have a large/active user community/base, with many modules/plug-ins/skins available.. 4. Easy to build/deploy a website, but it should still be flexible enough so that it has enough entry points where developers can control/customize using their own codes. Many thanks.
it could work but need a good hosting. (not shared) maybe the 1.6 will be fast, but i think the biggest weakness is the speed of the joomla, everything else could work. but there are other type of cms directly for your needs, you can use joomla for the main site, and pligg for the social stuff. it you want want to use joomla don't try 1.6 yet, there are very few extensions yet! joomla 1.5.22 plus pligg http://pligg.com/
joomla can do that, but you will need to use its with several joomla extensions. and part of that extensions that you need maybe the commercial extensions for 3rd party developer
start using drupal you will be sorry if you use joomla for last 3 years I have been using joomla and always felt sorry for my site
Yes u can do, best is that first try to understand normal jommla because you are newbie so later go for professional site
I believe you can do all this and much more combining Joomla + phpbb3. Check rockettheme it has temlpates for both but you will need jfusion for bridge. If you need something simpler then try Joomla + kunena. It is more stable with joomla but has less features. If you need a more facebook like website try jomsocial. As for the speed you may want to use minimal graphics and do some optimizations using some extensions. Joomla has maybe the largest available extensions.
yes we can do this through joomla and i have full faith that it is as compared to .NET. We can easily customized it and also make the hierarchy of super admin, admin and user. But need to a good hosting.
Joomla is the best cms for all such kind of requirements, there are thuousands of extensions available, you can customize it in any way you want. Even if you want the layout of front end according to you , it is also possible at very cheap prices of $30 to $250.
You could always just use subdomains of your domain and use 1-click installs. Have the members of the subdomain be linked to the members list of the original site. Not sure if that's what you're looking for though, just thought I'd throw that idea out there.
nice info.. thanks, I don't know about pligg before. I have check it.. and I think this stuff is very useful..
For this kind of project I would recommend Drupal. Joomla's ACL is still not that advanced, and creating a good user interface for the front end users will be challenging.
