Pakistani militants are obviously going to be planning to plant bombs at the games or maybe massacre with guns like they did in Mumbai. So will India's security forces be able to deal with terrorist threats when the time comes?

I'm sure that there would be enough security to protect the venues where the games are being held, but don't know about the rest of the country. There's nothing you can do when your enemy is just a border away. They can just sneak in with bombs and plant them anywhere. US has an advantage that its enemies are halfway across the world which makes it difficult for them to strike US.

India should be able to handle the situation, most especially with co-op from other participating countries

The low-intensity blast could also be related to the bookies who bet huge amounts on the IPL match and than got cold feet. You can not overlook anything. Yesterday there was a report in The Telegraph that, 25000 to 40000 crores are bet on IPL series in UK and Dubai and most of the money comes from the Indian subcontinent.

Terrorists usually strike when they are least expected to, because at that time and region the security preparedness is low. In Delhi, there is so much security at every major public place - be it shopping malls, metro stations, sports venues - that it actually is an irritant for the public. It becomes a bit intrusive when you're manually frisked wherever you go. But we're getting used to it because the neighbouring country is intent on using terrorism as an instrument of state policy.

It wont be easy to mount a terror attack on Delhi during the games. I thing Australia has been acting a bit too panicky (your link is from an Aussie paper) in revenge for the sort of media bashing they got in India after a spate of murderous attacks on Indian students there.

Aussies are usually the most paranoid when it comes to such things.

I think reason for the same is, they have not been in a real terror attack situation probably.
If they have one on their own soil, may be they will get to the ground level situation, as a country could be safe even if it had past terror strike records

There really is no effective defense against terrorist attacks.

It is simply impossible to protect all possible targets.

They think they do a good job avoiding terrorist attacks and everyone should be like them, while the reality is that Al Qaeda has a tough time trying to get jihadis cross 5,000 miles of Indian Ocean stealthily

It doesn't take much in the way or personnel or resources to execute a terrorist attack.

It looks like the recent terrorist bombing in Bosnia was organized with help from Algeria, but the "hands and feet" of the operation were locals. There are lots of young Muslims in both India and Australia, all they need is a little bit of chemistry tutoring or a few smuggled weapons.
