256MB you should be able to use fine, if you install a small hosting panel such as Kloxo, which claims to only use less then 20Mb, but as long as its just your site your hosting , and of course your not getting 10k hits daily on it.

Avoid Kloxo, go for Webmin that is really reliable and easy to understand. Kloxo is more "sexy" but not so much intuitive, Webmin is more powerful, less sexy but easily understandable. I am posting a screenshot here of Webmin/Virtualmin:

I opened the Server zone just to let you understand how it can be easy to configure everything without too much troubles.

But if you have less than one Gigabyte don't try to install VirtualMin GPL (if you want to host more than one website) install Webmin and then Virtualmin as module.

If you have more than one Gigabyte install directly VirtualMin GPL (same as above) and Webmin will be installed by default.

You need to remove unused services, have a look at running processes, if you don't use daily the FTP, disable proftpd and enable it only when you use it. Edit the apache configurations and also the PHP.ini, I was looking at your PHP configuration (You put as index.php <?php phpinfo(); ?> ) and you are allowing 128mb of memory for PHP while 32/16 mb are more than enough for it, if you don't use the VPS to receive and send email, disable all the mail daemons (POP/SMTP). Then if you have (of course you have) SSH access after the configuration is done you can also turn off WEBMIN by using "# service webmin stop". And turning on only when you need it. I mean, you are using a 512mb of ram VPS!!! You need to balance all the configurations!!!

By restarting Apache I obtained a bit more of free RAM.

By shutting off SENDMAIL I obtained another bit of free RAM and we can do more! Just look at Apache: is still not configured well, look at how many process it load by default!

The problem when you buy a cheap VPS is that they won't teach you how to get the best of your virtual private server. They want you to buy the cheapest one, they want you to fall in the dark hole of desperation while many doesn't know that with 256mb of ram a website can greatly run! But of course.. for just 5 bucks month you need to hit your head in the wall and so spending 65 dollars at the telephone with the provider to find a solution on how to run a single website and most of the time the call will finish with the client upgrading his VPS plan because it was not the perfect one for him (or her).

This is going to be polemic, I know, but this is what companies seems want! Having US to buy inexpensive products (like most mobile phones are becoming inexpensive) to spend more in other services or creating products apparently inexpensive with the same look and feel of premium products but with leaks of features with only one result: giving it back to buy the most expensive one! Yes... with functions that we'll never use!

Just to finish, the VPS is fine and you can run every website you want... And.. an advice, change the password... you won't like to see your TEST VPS suspended because someone will use it to send spam or to host phishing or scam websites. Right? :)

    Cheers.
