Can I use robots.txt to do this kind of redirect?

I have to change directories of my site, say from /articles/2006/123.html to /articles/123.html. All the pages are static html files, but there are too many html files.
Can I use robots.txt to do the redirect or some other way?

You are confusing robots.txt with .htaccess

    .htaccess will work.

    Hey,

What is the use of .htaccess? Please explain me.
I have seen that file in my hosting server. I couldn't understand the purpose of that file.

    Thanks,
    Krishna Srinivasan
