    Sure! It is very effective if your articles are approved. you must create great content that will drive visitors to your site.
    It is a great way to build backlinks.But there are other ways also to generate traffic like forum posting, blog commenting, social bookmarking etc.

    It's a good method, but don't abuse it! Select only to highest of PR for Article Directories.. It's also important to expand your link building horizons and set your self up with a daily schedule.
