Some people say directory submission is not good way of seo off page caused if we submit directory submission then then our site will be penalized by Google, But I have a query that I analyzed our website competitor where got top 1,2,3 had submitted more directory submission and made bulk back link of directory where directory is not too good and got porn sponsor ad in there directory site where I am not submitting our website links, Please let me know I should do there or not.

    Hello,

Google says that if a particular site has high PR and if you will put your site link on that particular site then it will be beneficial for you.So, if you will submit your site in high PR directory like Dmoz then it will be beneficial for you.But yes if you do it in bulk way or submit your site in another low PR and spammy site then I think it will not beneficiary in fact it will harmful for your site.

So the key point is whatever you do; do it in best manner and on best site.

    Thank you.

Directory submission is the only technique which help us to have more quality backlinks, targeted traffic, etc. It takes time but the result is more beneficial then any other techniques.

Directory submission is good if you find high-page rank directories. But be natural. Don't Spam.

Yeah like he said there is no need of directory submissions, just like keywords google stopped using these antiquated techniques for ranking, all you have to do is work on you links and meta tags, that is what google and I don't know of any search engine that doesn't use these two techniques for rankings and SEO, for instance our ad classified site/auction site was only submited once and there was no any significant change there after! I recommend you work on you meta tags, links and the general design of your website!

Directory submission is good if you are using high PR websites and submitting your information in relevant category.

Directory submission still works. But not really good. Do this but focus on other link building techniques.

People like to throw around advice, based on half-read articles and some rumours spread around in forums etc. It happened with directories, it happened with guest blogging, happened with SEO as a whole. This is why people are so scared of it, because they receive so many different opinions from people they don't know.

I'll try to keep it short and sweet. For the most part directory submission is obsolete, because most directories exist for the sole purpose of gaining affiliate commissions. Using those, especially when adding them in a bulk, is a very strong signal for Google that your link building is unnatural and your website should be penalized. The common misconception here is that the algorithm catches and punishes all. It doesn't. There are still many websites that for some part used unnatural/black hat techniques but are still ranked well. That does not exclude the scenario that they are caught at a later point and penalized. Do not try to do something wrong just because someone else did it and it seems to work. You don't know the whole process your competitor went for and how hidden it was from the algorithms.

Now, there are still valuable directories. So how to use them. First indication is to see if there is a manual moderation of the entries, best if someone checks or tries your services before submitting you. Next you want to use relevant directories to your business. Remember that it not only matters where you got your link from, but who are their linking buddies too. Finally you don't want to add many new links from directories in bulk, because that immediately shines as an indicator that something is fishy with that site. But if you follow the advice of choosing only the highest quality directories you will soon see that they are not so many and that way there is no danger of adding many of them at once, simply because you won't be able to find that many.

Alright, this wasn't so short but hope it helps :)

It's a good way to get some good backlinks. It's important to find RELATED to the niche directories. Then, be sure to use DIFFERENT title and DESCRIPTION in every directory (mix them!) for best results... Yes, it can be a waste of time, but it's the only way to get a few good backlinks from directories. Pay more attention to other good SEO activities! ;)

Now days SEO' totally changed So According to me Directory Submission not good for website my friends say use High PR sites but High PR sites will not Approve your Directories. Don't waste your time. Must use Social Media for Quality Traffic. Social media will not effect on your Organic result but we can get quality traffic from Social media.

Do directory submissions work? Remember when google deindexed (spammy) directories? It just shows that it works! Submitting your site to DMOZ, don't expect they'll approve as most of the sites we make are being monetized as affiliates. See their criteria http://www.dmoz.org/guidelines/include.html ... Where to submit then? Go for directories related to your niche (find them) and see if they have strict manual approval of submitted sites. Just look at the type of sites they accept and from there, you can decide (assuming your site contents also have well researched articles and not just "unique that passed copyscape"). Although, directory submission shouldn't be your main link building BUT you shouldn't also disregard directory submissions b'cuz it works & helps in ranking.

In my opinion, Directory Submission is good and it should be one of your "must-have" link building strategy.
I usually use free submission for my 2nd tier sites instead of my money-site. It also help me to get some backlinks to diversify my brand anchor-text.

Use human editing directories such as DMOZ, moo directory, lii directory and many others.
