Sure, but it will help if the keywords are in the page title, visible text, etc. But the quality of the backlinks is very important, unless the keyword is not competitive...
snowbird thanks for the reply. I ask as some seo companies claim to be able to get a site to rank for competitive keywords without doing any on page seo. Yep i can imagine the quality of the links would need to be very good. In addition to quality will there need to be lots and lots of IBL's? Thanks fuzz
Definitely so. Adobe.com is #1 for "Click Here" even though that phrase does not appear on the page. Yet it still ranks as #1 among more than one and a half BILLION pages competing for this keyword.
Back links with keyword rich anchors can rank you high. However, this will normally only be if you are dealing with a keyword that is not very competitive. For super popular words, it takes a lot of combining with on and off page SEO.
When you are working a competitive key term you have to get more text links than your competition. Plus good on page SEO. It can become costly, but it can be done.
I have several niches that rank #1 with quality backlinks and good on-page SEO. It took a few months to get that spot and the competition wasn't that strong.
Google bombing proves this point. George Bush had one for "miserable failure" and now has one for "dumb motherf#$@^er" There are many factors in page rank but many back links make a huge difference to pr.
