If you haven't had much experience with managing root access to a server then you should look for a managed dedicated server provider. Some unmanaged providers do provide management services at a low monthly fee. EpicLayer.com is an example so you might want to take a look ;)

I'd like to subscribe to the question addressed to VPS administration sharks here ...
Can someone give an advice on how to start managing a VPS in a most effective way? I mean, provide some links to the appropriate resources which are short and complete at the same time.
    Thank you in advance

Most VPS companies nowadays offer full management plans for an additional price.

I would suggest you start with a VPS which "usually" has most unwanted tasks "managed" by the hosting company (OS installation, updates, security and basic tuning of the server) and you jump to the next level of dedicated server when ready.

If you are in need for Dedicated you might want to consider "managed" dedicated as you will not need to focus so much on the tuning of your server.
