Can I redirect all broken links to homepage using 301 redirects? Is this SEO friedly?

I recently created a script that redirects all broken links, and instead of displaying a 404 not found, redirects every single one of them to my homepage.

Is this OK for SEO purposes? (I am using Sitecore running on ASP.net)

Your advice will be highly appreciated, thanks in advance!

But could that be considered as "spaming" or make a damage on your longer term rankings?

Google may not like it coz that'll create mass meta title's duplication.

That is also true. You mean that all broken links automatically get the meta title of the homepage? - Then what would be the smartest way to eliminate this problem?
