I see some websites publish first few lines of a news and then more further reading provide link to original content. Is this legal? Basically, I want to publish RSS feeds on my site in similar fashion, where I would publish first few lines lines of content and provide link to original source for further reading. Would it be legal? Please provide your viewpoint. Thanks SBS
Look at this site: http://paper.li/ Apparently they do the same - publish blurbs from third part sites. edit: The legality of it would depend on where your server is located. As I understand, under US and other nations' laws, you can freely quote an article as long as you do not rip it off completely.
There are no clear rules on what is allowed or not but there are some principles of "Fair Use" Standford University has the best (IMO) overview. http://fairuse.stanford.edu/Copyright_and_Fair_Use_Overview/chapter9/
I think it's possible as long as you don't rip everything from it. It's best to rewrite it just to be sure.
I would like to know the same as I am wanting to do this to. I figured it would be ok since you can't read the entire articles unless you click a link to the page with the original content.
Yes, you can do it. It's one of those copyright loopholes. You should know this, because you see the media do this all of the time. Even showing very short clips of movies and shows is allowed. This too you have seen.
