Can I possibly compete?

I am starting this new website and targeting a keyword similar to "computer cases" (going big for the first rank)

I then used Yahoo Site Explorer to check my first ranked competition. My competition has 210,000 inlinks because it is a major distributor of many things and has tons of links from other pages across its entire site, but only a managable 5,000 from sites other than its main domain.

So now I ask if it is possible to compete within a year if I build many many quality backlinks and have good content.

work like 10,000 backlinks work with right anchor text, or work like 100,000 backlinks with right anchor text work...

what i am trying to ask is how much weight do those 205,000 links from the same site to my competitors page have?

You need to focus on "quality" backlinks and not so much quantity. A handful of backlinks from PR4-5 pages can have a good impact on your site versus a ton of PR0 links.

so with a large handful of good high PR quality backlinks I can eventually oust a giant with loads of links from the same domain?

The short answer is yes but it's hard to tell how long it will take to get past your competitors. It also depends on the age of your domain and how much work you're willing to put into it. In due time with the right amount of links and uniqueness of your content, you should be able to do it.

computer cases are pretty cheap. people are selling them for 20-30 a piece these days. for the kind of money you can make with this, compitition is just too big. however, if you want to go ahead with this, thats fine. but dont just look at your competitor's # of backlinks. 220k backlinks is not somehting you want to target, its how many quality related links you can get.

its not computer cases and i am not selling them.

its a similar keyword. I am choosing the best of the best of that genre of the keyword and writing about them based on user's reviews and funneling them into a well built site, which will then outsource the product to the people that sell them.

i am creating a website that sort of reviews products of a certain category and is a nice looking site devoted to these products and that is easy to navigate and only focuses on the best products of that category. my specific producr pages then rederict the visitor out to major resellers rather than selling the product myself.

with that said is it possible for me to compete with the resellers themselves?

You can always compete if you've got enough money but judging by the tone of your post you haven't got a lot of money to play with?

Try and do something a little differently than your competitors - advertise locally (newspapers etc) and build up your business offline as well as online. Make sure that you offer hassle-free returns policies and have great customer care. This will help you build up a really good reputation...

    Good luck!

    Cheers, p

Exactly! You don't need thousands of links to rank high, but you do need quality links.

It can be done, but you will have your work cut out for you. If the site you are competing against has a much higher domain age, it may take longer than a year. Like the others said: Focus on quality, relevant inbound links - although I think will also need quite a few.
