I want to know if i can make my personal home computer into a web shared hosting server? i dont plan to do any VPS or Dedicated server hosting yet... Dell Optiplex GX620: Intel Core 2 Duo Dual Core CPU, E6750 @ 2.66GHz 1333 MHz Bus Speed (V Pro) 3GB's total PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 Memory 320GB Sata Hard Drive
You sure can although it may be against your ISP's terms of service to do so. Â If you're computer is behind a router or firewall you will have to enable port forwarding and then forward port 80 and any others for the services that you'll be using.
Not only that, but don't try running a web hosting business off of a server in your house. That's fine for personal websites, but people want their sites hosted in actual datacenters, with redundant power supplies, on-site support technicians, fast connections, etc. etc. If you are actually going to run a hosting business from your house, you had better let your clients know in advance, because 99.9% of potential clients would consider that a major deal breaker.
Okay, well i heard that i can host from home as long as i get a cpanel license and t1 or t3 connection...
You won't be able to host very many sites on a T1 connection effectively. Â But yeah if you had a T-carrier you could do it as that's something totally different. Â You should have mentioned that you weren't using residential cable or DSL and we would have given you more appropriate responses.
so if its that hard and expensive to host from home then i rather off go buy a resellers hosting package from a hosting company... And will just do web design at home and sell it and host it also... lol
It's not difficult at all, but it is expensive. Check out the prices for T1's and at that cost, you could have a heck of a server (or 2) in a datacenter somewhere for the same price. T1 is also slooooooow as has been mentioned. For that matter, T3 isn't very fast either.
I don't think there'll still be some PING to check on because having clients with this kind of idea are very unlikely. Even if you don't tell it to them right away, the truth comes out eventually and sooner than you expected because of the inevitable lack of service. By the way if any of you want to try cpanel hosting just like dynamichost, there's this new hosting company that offers it for free which is instantfreesite.com. They have regular backups and pretty much everything you need to start on your hosting needs. They always manage to tend their client's needs and has unlimited disk space. They're really useful especially when you're still starting out.
This is not a smart option in todays world. Not to mention you will most likely have your internet connection terminated once they find out. I would get a VPS server in a datacenter or with a larger well known company and then do your hosting on it. You get a few clients running out of your house and one traces it back, the public slamming will be enough to end your idea before you get it going.
In theory it is possible and as easy as baking a cake. Install XAMP. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=xamp&l=1 Configure XAMP and copy HTML documents, images and other documents into the root folder. Go to http://127.0.0.1 and you'll see your files. Access the files from anywhere in the world is just as easy! Just type in the IP of the computer you are running XAMP (PC has to be turned on with XAMP running) You also can upload an entire CMS (php-files). This is more difficult. You have to install PHP and MySQL. I have tested it a few months ago. It's not so hard to do. Practical it's not possible. You'll never get the same security level as professional web/vps hosting. Downside? If your website has to be accessible your PC has be turned on. Professional servers in datacenters have an uptime of 99.98-100%. So why don't pay for them?
if its about your personal sites then its fine, but you really need to be tech to do so because there are certain more possibilities. Where as there softaculous released a software named as amps which you can install and it will run you apache and other things on your local machine.

I'd say it's rather simple to do it but you need to be sure that it will work stable at home, eg: electricity, your ISP. You may connect alternative isp channel and buy UPS. I know few companies were starting like home servers for their personal sites.
