Hi Guys, I don't know much about GPL stuff. So can you tell me if I can remove "Proudly powered by WordPress" credit link from WordPress Twenty Ten theme footer LEGALLY. Thanks in advance.
Actually I received a request from a blogger to remove the footer credit link from his blog. I'm just clarifying the confusion.
Hiding text is not good for SEO point of view, the site may get penalized. I'm leaving it to the blogger. However, here is an article how i removed the footer credit from Twenty Ten theme.
Wordpress is released as GPL license and you can modify and edit its source code and there is not restriction that u keep any link to wordpress official website. You can remove "powered by Wordpress" link from ur website.
No search engine is going to remove a site just for one hidden link, especially when it's on a Wordpress theme and points back to Wordpress. To answer the OP's question, there are lots of big Wordpress sites that have no credit link. I'm surprised when I find a site that has one.
It can be removed. You shouldn't try to hide it or mask it with CSS. This is a bad practice. There is no reason to credit WordPress, they do an awesome job but there is really no need.
