If template is good you can get lots of links if you use Design by ... I use only one backlink in the footer when I submit free template since I know people hate 3 or more demanded backlinks It got me lots of links and traffic also. One template I made was especially popular among university teachers, so I got a lot of .edu links. Go for it !
