    yup, there is a chance to monetize this site, just look at what the other online gaming sites do.

    have some banner add positions for sale and so on...

    Absolutely! It will take work though. Throw up some ads, obviously, but more importantly think about offering a premium version or premium membership with insider features, etc. Read Seth Godin's Purple Cow while doing this. (not an aff. link)

    The answers will always be under your nose as well. Find a site similar to yours and see what they are doing. If they have banners to affiliate products then become affiliates with the same said affiliates.
