I've wondered this myself. To stay safe, I always adjust the code from the adsense site.

I'd say it's perfectly fine. After all, it's just a 6 digit hex code that is passed into the Javascript and determines the color of the text/title/link/border/background. I've often customized it directly to match with the custom colors I run on my pages.

I thing that just changing colour codes by hand isn't anything what could be wrong.

I change the color codes by hand.. it saves me time from logging into my AdSense account. I wouldn't see why it would pose a problem...

You can change anything manually to save time if you can change it using Adsense's CP ad creation wizard. Of course don't tell them you changed it manually, but if it can be changed using the CP, it is allowed.

You're supposed to go through the website's wizard, but that's just so you don't break teh code. As long as you're positive you'll do it correctly, Google shouldn't mind.

I think most people see this as a "don't ask, don't tell" situation. Technically, it's against TOS to change the code, but there is no way for sure for Google to tell if you changed to code or not (unless you screw something up). So, most people feel it's fine to change it.
