Hi! Recently I came accross a very nice domain that actually DOESN'T have the word 'Amazon' in the domain name yet it is very old and was once owned by Amazon, INC as per http://www.scamadviser.com/ But now the domain is lying around as expired since a long time. I checked and it is available to be bought. Now can I buy this? Or is it risky or wrong in any way? Thanks.
Yes, you most certainly can buy it. Or, I should say, you could have bought it. Because if you did not buy it, somebody else already did. It is no longer available. I also searched the U.S. Trademark database and found no trademarks on "Scam Adviser", "scamadviser", or "scamadviser.com".
I think you misunderstood him. He hasn't disclosed the domain name yet. He said he got to know about the domain name was once owned by amazon using scamadviser.com
If it has the word "Amazon", there can be a trademark challenge. Otherwise, it can be bought and used. And thanks to pupul for pointing out my misreading of the original post.
Amazon abandoned the site, so it is available for anyone to buy and use. However, be sure not to reference Amazon in any way on the site, lest that raise copyright issues with Amazon.
I would recommend quite deliberately using it in a way that is completely different to how Amazon used it - different product or service, etc but well done, good catch!
