are there any restrictions on owning a .org domain? (ie:has to be non-profit)

a .com I was after has gone, which is the next best suffix one to own? (all are available but .org sounds most "powerful")

    thanks in adv...

    James.

Anyone can purchase a dot org domain. It may not be the best fit for your site but there are no restrictions on their use as there is with a dot biz domain. The biz extension must be used for a business

You can register .org, but personally I'd go for the .net. If in doubt, buy all of them - but it still won't be as good as having the .com.

Thanks Smyrl, What is the definition of a business, is a website not a business? Is there something online that defines the term?

    thanks...

Actually, there isn't a restriction to registered a .biz . I did that and they did not ask me for any other documentations.

Oh I bought my first dot biz without realizing there was a restriction and I had it put used it on a family genealogy site. Then I read about the use of the dot biz domain name. I quickly shifted domains around so my dot biz domain would meet the criteria. Whether or not they are enforcing I can not say. Naturally the registrars would rather sell domain names so do not publicize the restriction.

    Here is one discussion http://www.dnforum.com/archive/index.php?t-199.html

There are supposed restrictions but they don't seem to be enforced. The registrars are more interested in making their money.

Since the .com is gone, the next best extension imo is .net. Get the .net if possible.

I have a .org domain. No questions were asked when I registered it. It's the best fit for me, since the website is a nonprofit.

Although anyone can get a .org domain, it does generally have the connotation of a nonprofit. I would factor that into your decision.

Well, I hate .net ( better for service providers / networks ).

.ORG is better when .com is gone. Also, I think it is valued more by search engines while ranking...just like the advantage enjoyed by .edu and .gov sites. Others may differ my opinion

I only like .com. This is the most advantageous domain in my view.

.info domain seems emerging as second choice, few ppl even prefer .info instead of .net

Pick-up the one you want or need, from a SEO point of view it doesn't matter.

imo, I would choose .org because people seems to know it better that .info for instance.

if you buy the .org, you will get some free traffic for the .com owner.

if you need to have a business you can have the .org ( no restrictions) but own the .com too!!

If all fails, just find an alternative name that you can use.
