Of late - I have been getting lots of automated submission on my niche directories. I often see that - my niche Health Directory is receiving - Reciprocal submissions from datarecovery sites I immediately BAN the domain. But what if I BAN the IP too? Will the ban be effective for all users who is using the ISP? Today - I received submissions - from IP - 122.163.**.** With help from Self Seo - I discovered that the IP is located in Australia - and is used by one Indian ISP - airtelbroadband.in. So definitely the submitter is from India - and using Airtel Broadband Service. If I BAN that particular IP - will it restrict access to those users who has same IP upto C class? Please help. I'll definitely BAN the IP is it only restrict that exact IP.
all of them or someone is using dynamic IP unless you ban the whole range you will not able to tackle the situtation If you ban all IP's in range then you may loose some genuine users in that range Regards Alex
Do you have a "captcha" on your submissions page? If you don't this can slow down automated submissions. Banning IPs is technically easy, but from a business standpoint not so clean and simple. If the abusing visitor is spoofing their IP address, then they can keep changing it to overcome any blocks. Blocking out shared IPs can close down access by legitimate visitors. If the IP seems "real" and the originating country is not desireable as a visitor, you might consider firewalling the whole region. Sometimes, we keep our sites open to certain areas of the world, but at a net loss, when we factor in abuse from those regions.
When i ban an IP, i understand that it may affect others sharing that server, but the likelyhood that another customer on that server will use your directory is low, so hopefully no one shall really be affected by the ignorance of the submitter. I think when people consider banning IP's to block a country or regoin, if thats even possible, that its silly and ignorant, but in the above example, its not going to really affect anyone other than the spammer.
I don't ban IP addresses. However, I would definitely ban the domain and probably also delete 'all submissions' from that IP on that day. I also include this notice in my rejection email so that webmasters know if they are using a rogue directory submitter/software
I usually mass-delete the listings, not a big deal. I tried banning the domain feature but it does not seem to work well.
This guy seems to be using same IP/Static - 122.162.67.57 That is the IP of the SPAMMER. Hi submitted domain is - "p-dd.us" I do have captcha - on most directories - but it seems -they can still pass through. That is my concern also. I do use Paid PhpLD script - V3.3.
Ban the range, instead of a simple 403 forbidden response return a nice message explaining the situation and leave contact information anyone banned in error to submit through. Unban the range after a month or two when they may have moved to a new range and see what happens.
Yes - I can see the IP button and I can BAN the IP. I am just wondering if it will hamper the whole range or I can use that particular IP. Thanks for yur advise. I'll try to look into your suggestion.
I don't know of any such way because these automaters usually have dynamic ip and changers so it would be near impossible and not worth the trouble prob.
One of my wild thinking - Just "IF--if" - the so called SEO service company (SPAMMER) is a member of DP and by chance - if the owners of these sites along with others see this thread - They know that I just banned these domains from my diectory -- (While I feel for the owners of the sites - I also think they should first do some research on techniques/methods used by companies they hire for marketing their sites)
