Sorry for the newb question, but can Google read the file name of the images I upload to my blog? I'm asking this because I have been naming all my images keywords for my site.

If you used the Alt tag you should be good.

Google can read your name. But its better to have ALT tag. Google will consider page contents also when image searching.

Yes they can read the image name, and by all means use alt text to put your keywords in. I have a habit of naming my images files with a keyword in them. keyword-small-image.jpg I uses dashes and not underscores.

You're doing really very good work. But I also recommend you to use your site keywords on your image ALT tag. Google display image result with their ALT text also. So, keep using site keywords as image names, image alt tag and in hyperlink also.

So can I make image name one keyword, and alt name a separate keyword?

absolutely, there's no reason why not. But be careful not to be too spammy with the keywords in your alt tags
