Can google block adsense without any reason?

A few friends of mine have reported that their adsense accounts got disabled without any reason. All what we are able to find out is that they all were using adwords traffic for their websites. Could we count this as a reason for their adsense blocking?

Yes, that could be the reason.

Even though Google doesn't strictly prohibit Adwords-Adsense arbitrage, it doesn't like sites which are created with the sole purpose of displaying ads.

If the content of the site is low quality and most of the traffic comes via Adwords. there is a good probability that Google won't allow the site to use Adsense.

Yes they can, adsense is not a human right, they can choose whoever they want to do business with and stop at anytime, just like you can.

They do not need to have a reason actually (but since cooperation is also in their interest they don't go banning people around just like that)...

Sure they can, but why would they, you don't ban someone who are making money for you without any reason. People using AdWords to get traffic to their Made for Adsense sites is bad for Google, for one it really annoys people that when they click an Ad they are just sent to another page filled with ads, so that seems like a good reason for Google to ban someone.

That may be the reason being blocked too. You can try to appeal to Google see if they release your account but this is no 100% guarantee that your account will released.

It is clearly written in Google AdSense TOS that they can terminate your services any time without any prior notification. By accepting that terms you agree that you can be banned any day.

In my experience rarely such things happen and when that happen, it rectifies. Google reinstated Shawn's account in no time.

Arbitrage is bad, avoid adwords traffic on a blog which has adsense ads on it. The only real safe traffic is search engine traffic. If your blog gets over 70% search engine traffic, you can consider yourself almost safe.

But how does it make sense that if someone is using Adword (which is far more expensive) to draw traffic to his website for the purpose of adsense revenue?

Not everyone can do it. It's a tricky game.

People who use Adwords-Adsense arbitrage usually bid on keywords which have low competition and thus keep their cost of traffic down.

Adsense have right to stop your account anytime without telling you the reason. However, they wouldn't simply ban any account because publisher is the people who helping them to earn money
