Hello, first of all, don't use SMF, IPB or any another PHPBB like forum software with huge functionnalities but no valide XHTML code and no SEO optimization ( the meta tags plugins don't count as Seo optimization ) . If you have some experience with Php and XHTML/CSS, then the best choice would be BBPress, it has only basic functionalities, but it's easy to use and to customize, it's also very fast and used by large as small communities ( Wordpress.org support, Chawlk ( or 9rules )...( and me soon ) use it ) . But if you're a beginner in Web development, then you will have to choose a big forum software like VB or IPB which aren't SEO optimized ... Okay there are some SMF and IPB plugins which add automatically meta tags, generate sitemap etc... But seriously, that's only the basic SEO, for an advanced SEO ( managing <H(X)> headers, keywords, well structured internal links etc... ) you will have to use a fully customizable forum software like BBPress or Vanilla . I don't say that BBPress and Vanilla are Seo optimized out of the box, you will have to do that manually by editing the template files or by coding some hooks or customized plugins, but that's the point => They are easily customizable ! PageRank depends on internal and external links, their quality etc... Internal link structure depends on the forum software being used, so choosing the right platform can really help you .
whether www.forumsite.com or forums.site.com isn't the issue. all depends on how you market/promote your site. pagerank depends on how many backlinks you have and what are the PRs of the sites linking to you along with how many external links those pages have.
I agree with the comments above. A forum can get good pagerank and search engine rankings regardless if it is www.domain.com or forum.domain.com For both PR & SERP external backlinks are the most important thing. If you have good enough backlinks, you can get good rankings even without an optimized website.

Forget Google traffic for forums. If make well forum and promote it that enough will get many users. But not easy to make forum and maintain. Also dont think to monitor alone need too much moderator to keep the forum professional and avoid spammers.
PageRank depend on your link popularity and somehow visitors too. So, whatever you take, you need to have a good strategy in making good visitors and Bls for your forum / site.
Forums are a great optimization project. They are good for generating unique content, and unique = good for optimization.
I'd suggest you go with a subdomain such as forums.digitalpoint.com rather than digitalpoint.com/forum and stick with it. This is totally up to you though. The real challenge is attracting visitors that will use your forum on a regular basis.

Just to take a example. For http://www.diskusjon.no/ - there has not been done any special SEO, and yet the PR is 5. (That is related to many links from the sites that the discussion board is partnered with, all those sites has PR6).
