Can directory submissions reduce PR or look bad from Google?

Just wondering if it can ever hurt you to post to every directory and its brother? I have started to do this but on the big ones only. Also do you see good traffic from it or is it really only the backlinks you are looking for?

other than big directories you can't expect decent traffic from directories
back links are always counted at google, but you can't expect any great SEO results only wtih directory submissions.

I wouldn't say its going to hurt you, some will help more than others, as web-fanatic points out, dont expect traffic directly from the directories and dont do submissions only.

I dont think links can hurt you - only help. Now links from qualiy sites/directories will help you far more than those from low quality directories.

There are two kinds ot traffic - direct and indirect - direct traffic is far easier to measure than indirect but you will probabl receive less direct than indirect.

Hor example i have a site which typucally ranks on the first page of goolge for a term i want. recently it dropped to the top of page two. I get far beter traffic results on page one so I submitted that site to a high quality directory and now it is bouncing back to page one. my indirect traffic results are typically what i look for first.

sorry bout the typing - doing it left handed.

It wouldn't hurt unless all your backlinks come from directories. I guess you could expect traffic mostly from you niche directories.

Like everyone is saying, links can't hurt you. They may do nothing for you, but they can't hurt.

What about all the talk concerning links from pr0 directories? They are supposed to cause negative PR.

You can't control who links to you. So you shouldn't be hurt by any directory submissions. However, you can control who you link to so be careful to only link out to high quality sites.

There are tons of companies that have most of their links coming from directories, so don't let this discourage you from submitting. Just do a little research and make sure that the directories you submit to are of good quality and have been around for awhile. But more important than that, don't submit just for the sake of pr because that is only judged by one search engine, the others could care less, so you can still get good results if you stick to your goal.

The worst thing a PR 0 link can do is have no effect. Besides, pr values are nor always important.

You might find it interesting to have a look at another digitalpoint thread dealing with the issue, http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1254922.

This is my thinking regarding link building:

All inbounds are good to some extent as long as any one type of link does not make-up a large percent of all inbounds. If 90% of your inbounds are directory listings, that may not look good to Google. Same thing is 90% were reciprocal link exchanges.

hotftuna has hit bulls eye here. Feel free to get 1000s of links from directories but make sure you have other type of links as well.

One more thing when I add my site to a directory should I use the same info all the time for the description or change it a little bit each time? Does this matter in getting better quality links?

That is the real thing which occurs with directory submissions as you stated here. No great output you can expect from directory submissions but only few backlinks you can get from google with some quality directories.

I would think most backlinks are good, but I would be very dubious about using link farms as I have heard some are "blacklisted" and having your site associated with a "blacklisted" site could be a negative:eek:

No backlinks can harm you, its just that some poor quality backlinks may not provide you enough link juice benefit like other backlinks do.
