Can Competition be beaten by incoming links?

Suppose i am rank 9 th in Google for a keyword with competition over 20 million .. i would like to know how can i improve my ranking and be in the top 3 ..

Will more backlinks be the solution?

Not sure about "the solution" but it's your best shot. Get steadily more relevant links and you should rise up.

 

From my knowledge and experience, that is the way to go.

Im kinda in the same boat ranking two on google for my number one key phrase after haning out in the 10 to 20 range for a few weeks. I've done some quality relevant sitewide pr exchanges and am at two right now.

 

Once you get into the top 20 for a competitive phrase, put down the coding pen, and get the link building one out.

 

I would also add to this that once you rank well to continue getting links and stay ahead of your competitors because there is always a new guy on the block trying to knock you down.

09th position already indicates that you are doing a wonderful job. Here is what you can do to beat the remaining competitors.
1. Keep your website showered with fresh, unique content. Google hates duplicate

so think the opposite. Update your website at least once every week if not everyday. the quicker the better.
2. Just gear up the link building process. Go through the top ranking competitive website and figure out the what is missing from your part and improve it. If you are having difficulties finding the right links for you just google the following and contact each of the top 15 sites.

join Coop (if not already in it). after i joined coop, i chosed 5 keyphrases.... for all of them i am now in TOP 10, so this helped a lot!

Yes I would be interetresed in this Coop thing aswell.

 

Well I would also like to add that your own sites links also play a vital role in achieving high rankings... suppose you have 500+ pages on your site and every page links to your site with the same anchor text that you are targetting would give you a healthy ranking and keep you there....

I have read many interesting threads about the success achieved by webmasters by joing the Coop Ad Network. Based on comments from senior members here, it is something you should not miss. BTW I am also thinking of joining Coop

Coop is great, I would say it has the biggest effect on MSN rankings nowadays but that isnt to say it doesnt affect google and Yahoo, just less than it used to in my opinion. Definately worth trying out, especially if you have big sites with PR that would generate a lot of weight
