Can bulk directory submissions cause a penalty?

A site I was submitting to directories dropped from the keyword I was submitting for . It went from page 1 to page 80 yesterday and on a minute to minute basis its jumping around a few spots. It's still indexed, it still has page rank, and it still ranks for its own name in serps.

    My question(s) are:

Has anyone ever seen a site get punished for bulk directory submissions?

Has anyone ever known a site to temporarily lose massive SERP ranking only to return later?

If so how long did it take to return to normal?

How would I determine if a penalization did take place?

automatic submission can cause for google to penalize the site, but manual I don think. snd what about serp smth. strange is going on with google, maybe its a dane or global change of algo, Your site can be penalized if You sell links.

There is no definite answer to all your questions.

Google themselves have mentioned to avoid links from bad neighbourhood. Which in your case are directories.
If a directory has lots of broken links plus no editorial guidelines then this is a bad site to get backlinks from.

Bulk submissions are never recommended by anyone.

If you are acquiring hundreds of links to the same page with the same anchor text, then obviously you will get penalised. For long the penalty lasts for, only google can tell but what you can do is remove all those links that you've built and send a reconsideration request through GWT.

no, directory submissions will increase your serp, but don't do much,,,, because directory backlinks are unrelated backlinks........

The answer is YES if you use the same description and keywords for all submission.

I dont believe dir. submissions can cause any issue unless you've done 10,000 submissions per day through automatic methods.

It isnt that more submissions means more approvals.

It depends on how many other links your website has actually because if many quality links are there, even the automated submissions might not cause problems.

I dont think bulk directory submission will cause penalty even if very high number. Different directories take quite a few days to approve links, so you may submit to large number of directories on the same day, but will get approval on different days unless you buy them.

What about automatic submissions over a period of time rather than all at once?

    Based on an experience:

    1. Yes
    2. Yes
    3. After I removed the submissions.
    4. You will tell by your traffic.
