Can anyone tell me where the Google Building is?

I have stumbled on to this site in my attempt to learn about search engines. I only learned recently what the acronym SEO stood for. I feel like the new freshman on campus and am walking around not knowing where the building of my first class is and don't want to ask for fear of revealing that I am in fact a freshman, and it is my first day of SEO school. I have read through many threads, and am starting to learn the language though many is still confusing. Things like PR (I know that) and backlinking and getting banned by Google. Wow, that is scary...I hope I have not upset Google in any way.

Any recommendations on what I should read to get started. And what does one have to do to get banned by Google?
    Thanks,

You're lucky, it's easier now than it's ever been to learn about SEO, there are tons of site dedicated to it. I don't know how long you've been online and in the business for, but it shouldn't be too difficult to learn. (IMO, but i've been online for 11 years, and in the business for real for 5 years). Check news sites, including news.google.com . That's a good starting point.

Don't worry, as a newbie, you shouldn't get banned from google, unless you are really good at doing what you don't know what you're doing. :D

Welcome to the wonderful world of SEO!

Besides this website as a resource I always recommend http://www.w3.org/

There are an infinite amount. Just be careful. Trying to get to the top can cause people to rush and look for shortcuts (cloaking, redirects, linkselling etc...).

I went to w3.org. Great info. What if the HTML validator says your site has errors? Does that effect listing in search engines?

    Thanks,

That's a debatable point. As long as the bots can follow your on site navigation and links it probably doesn't matter if you are strictly compliant or not. Some people will argue it does. But I've never seen any proof.

After you drill through the earth deep enough and reach China, you then have to take the elevator down 666 floors and your final destination is the Google building

You need to learn the basics of SEO and you can learn from SEOMOZ. It is the best website to learn SEO over the Internet. After reading some theory, you will need to implement your learned knowledge. You can create a website for your own and try to rank it for fewer keywords.
